Eli Flournoy

Independent News Media Consultant — CNN (formerly)

Eli Flournoy is a 25-year veteran journalist with expertise managing newsgathering operations in the United States and internationally. He currently serves as project lead for Ohio University’s media partnerships in Indonesia.

In his final six out of 24 years with CNN, he oversaw a 24/7 team of assignment editors and managers dedicated to serving more than 220 affiliate broadcasters outside the United States. 

Formerly a supervising editor on CNN’s International Desk, Eli was central to directing coverage of the world’s biggest stories of the last 20 years, including the Bosnian War, the Kosovo War, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Princess Diana’s death, the war on terrorism, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Southeast Asia tsunami, and the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Eli also has extensive field-production experience, which includes news coverage and affiliate training in Angola, Indonesia, Israel and the Palestinian Territories, India, Pakistan, and Hong Kong, as well as the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia and the East Coast Blackout in the United States, and affiliate training in more than 15 countries.

Eli is a graduate of Indiana University (BA ’91) in Political Science with a minor in Spanish and an African studies certificate. He has served as an alumni student recruiter for Indiana University in the Atlanta market.

He is currently pursuing an MBA degree through Ohio University to develop the Sugarbush Valley LLC, a social enterprise innovation company focused on sustainable environmental development in Southeastern Ohio. This work builds on 10 years as a director of the Sugar Bush Foundation, which works with Ohio University and local communities to improve the quality of life in Appalachian Ohio by encouraging civic engagement and by fostering sustainable environmental and socioeconomic development.

Eli has served on church council and youth board of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Atlanta, through which he has led work mission trips for teenagers to Nicaragua, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. Eli also serves on the advisory board for Kennesaw State University’s Center for Student Leadership.
