Hilary Brandt

Acting Deputy Director — U.S. Diplomacy Center at the U.S. Department of State

Graduating in 1991 with her bachelors in Slavic Languages and Literatures and a certificate in Russian and East European Studies, Hilary Brandt was equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to not only explore her love for Slavic culture but to lead a successful, meaningful life. In addition to her studies at IU, Hilary also received a masters in political science from The George Washington University and a certificate in intermediate Ukrainian from Harvard University.

Following graduation, Hilary oversaw international exchange programs in Eastern Europe. Additionally, Hilary has worked as Director of Digital Communications at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and later the Director of the Office of Policy, Outreach, and Governance at the Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) at the U.S. Department of State. In both positions, she was responsible for organizing multiple people and ideas at once as well as developing the bureaus’ online presence.

Most recently, Hilary was appointed Acting Deputy Director of the U.S. Diplomacy Center for the U.S. Department of State. This position offers her the opportunity to merge her interest in other cultures and experiences in policy and community outreach. Once the construction of the Diplomacy Center is complete, Hilary and her team will curate exhibits and other educational opportunities regarding U.S. diplomacy efforts.

When Hilary first started her education at Indiana University, such a position did not exist. However, by following her passions and taking advantage of her liberal arts education, she has been able to transform the ways in which the United States conducts diplomatic procedures and land a job that suits her perfectly. Whether organizing international exchange programs that foster cultural understanding, or leading projects that are designed to inform and empower the public, a diverse, in-depth education made such an impact possible.
