E. Morrey Atkinson

Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing Operations — Bristol-Myers Squibb

Morrey Atkinson, Ph.D., (BS, 1987) is currently the Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing Operations at Bristol-Myers Squibb, based in New Jersey. His responsibilities include oversight of BMS’ global commercial manufacturing sites and external supply network. These global operations produce, test, and distribute each of the BMS brands, including Eliquis®, Opdivo®, and Orencia®. The various plants are located in North America and Puerto Rico, Europe, and Asia. Upon the acquisition of Celgene by BMS, he will also assume responsibility for the Celgene Manufacturing network. Morrey also serves as an executive advisor to the LGBTA+ People and Business Resource Group and led the company’s crisis response team during Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Earlier in his career at BMS, he led various aspects of the Biologics Development and Manufacturing Sciences organization, working alongside R&D to bring new molecules into the clinic and to patients, including the launches of Opdivo® and Empliciti®. 

Prior to BMS, Morrey’s career has included various scientific and management roles at Eli Lilly and Company, Cook Pharmica (now Catalent), and Targeted Genetics Corporation. He has worked in the field of cell and gene therapy, and is an inventor on several patents relating to viral vectors in gene therapy. He also spent time in Ireland starting up Eli Lilly’s Biologics production plant.

Morrey holds a B.S. from Indiana University in Biology (1987) and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Biological Sciences (1994). His Ph.D. work focused on symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. He is an avid sailor and an instrument-rated private pilot. Morrey and his husband, Ted, have a pottery studio/gallery in New Hope, Pennsylvania.
